Restore Your Hair With FUT Hair Transplants

Hair loss can have a major impact on your confidence and overall appearance. It affects both men and women, especially in more advanced stages. FUT hair transplants offer a proven, long-term solution by restoring hair density using your own follicles. This technique is particularly effective for patients who require a large number of grafts in a single procedure, delivering natural and permanent results.

What is FUE Hair Transplant?

Rectangle 1323 (10) (1)

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a minimally invasive hair transplant surgery. Individual follicular units, containing healthy hair follicles, are extracted from the donor area (typically the back and sides of the scalp) and meticulously transplanted to the recipient area (the bald areas or thinning areas). Unlike older methods that involved removing strips of scalp (FUT), FUE leaves minimal scarring, making it a preferred choice for many patients.

What Can FUE Hair Restoration Treat?

Rectangle 1323 (11) (1)

FUE hair transplant surgery can effectively address a variety of hair loss conditions, including:

  • Male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia)
  • Female pattern baldness
  • Receding hairline
  • Thinning hair
  • A receding beard or mustache
  • Eyebrow thinning
  • Scalp scarring due to accidents or burns

What is FUT Hair Transplant?

Rectangle 1323 (10) (1)

Also known as the strip transplantation method, FUT is a surgical hair restoration procedure where a strip of hair is removed from the back or sides of the scalp, where follicle roots are permanent in nature.

The treatment involves an incision, suture, and an advanced closure method.

Strip FUT is ideal for patients with advanced hair loss who need extensive restoration and high graft numbers. Depending on your needs, between 500 and 5000 grafts can be restored in one day, and the procedure can take between 4 and 12 hours.

How FUT Hair Transplant Works

Rectangle 1323 (11) (1)

The FUT technique is known for delivering strong permanent outcomes by extracting DHT-resistant (dihydrotestosterone-resistant) hair roots.

A horizontal strip containing multiple follicular units is harvested, then carefully separated so the grafts can be dissected and prepared for placement.

These grafts are then implanted into the recipient region of the scalp. While FUT is highly effective, the main noticeable drawback is the linear scar that can remain after extraction.

At Fortes Clinic, every FUT journey begins with a detailed consultation to confirm whether FUT is the best option for you. Once confirmed, your procedure is booked and planned around your restoration goals.

During treatment, a strip containing follicular units is harvested horizontally from the back or sides of the head. The strip is then cleaned, dissected into grafts, and inserted into the recipient area.

Because these are natural follicular units, they begin to grow in the target region over time, helping you achieve thick, dense, and natural-looking hair. For the most effective and natural result, the procedure should always be performed by a well-trained hair transplant specialist.

At Fortes Clinic in London, we provide best-in-class FUT hair transplants. Often called the strip method, FUT removes a thin strip of scalp from the donor area, then harvests and transplants individual follicular units into thinning or balding areas.

Although slightly more invasive than FUE, FUT remains a popular and effective option for patients with advanced hair loss or those requiring a larger number of grafts.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, with experienced surgeons focused on minimal scarring and natural-looking results, in a discreet and comfortable Harley Street clinic environment.

How FUE Works

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a modern hair transplant technique designed to restore natural-looking hair. In this procedure, individual hair follicles are carefully extracted from a donor area, typically the back or sides of the scalp, where hair is dense and resistant to thinning. These follicles are then meticulously implanted into areas experiencing hair loss or thinning, such as the hairline or crown.

FUE is minimally invasive and leaves no linear scar, making it a popular choice for those seeking a quicker recovery and more natural results. The process ensures that transplanted hair blends seamlessly with existing hair, offering a permanent solution to hair loss.

Benefits of FUT

Untitled design (38)

High Graft Yield in One Session

FUT enables a large number of grafts to be transplanted in a single procedure, making it ideal for patients who need extensive restoration.

Excellent Density and Coverage

Strip harvesting allows efficient graft preparation, supporting strong density and broader coverage across larger balding areas.

Low Graft Damage with Microscopic Dissection

Grafts are carefully dissected under high-magnification microscopes, with a reported damage rate below 1%, helping preserve graft quality and survival.

Long-Lasting, Permanent Results

FUT transplants DHT-resistant follicles that continue to grow naturally in the recipient area for durable, long-term restoration.

Minimal Visible Scarring with Advanced Closure

Modern Trichophytic closure techniques can significantly reduce donor-area scarring, which is often discreet once surrounding hair regrows.

Comfortable and Low-Maintenance Treatment

Performed under local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort, FUT also offers a low-maintenance outcome once transplanted follicles establish growth.

Aftercare

image 1978269011 (1)
  • Mild swelling, redness, itching, and some discomfort can occur after FUT; these are typically temporary and manageable with prescribed medication.
  • Follow all post-procedure instructions from your surgical team to support healing and protect newly transplanted grafts.
  • Most patients need little or no time off; if needed, around a week is generally sufficient before returning to normal routine.
  • Hats can usually be worn after one week to help protect the grafted area.
  • Healing and progress should be monitored with your clinic team, so any concerns can be managed early and recovery stays on track.
  • Be patient with growth: transplanted follicles establish over time, and improvement is gradual as density develops.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time will I need to take off after my surgery?

For most cases, little or no time needs to be taken off. If time off is needed, then a week or so is more than enough. Hats can be worn 1 week after treatment in order to protect the grafts.

First, take a look at our treatments and procedures section to get a feel of what each treatment entails. In-depth conversations will then be had at your consultation, where we will look into the best solution for you. Each case is different, and Dr. Saeed will work very closely with you to decide what’s best to do.

No. FUT & FUE are minor cosmetic surgery as well as one of the safest and most popular procedures performed. Our clinic environment provides you with skilled and experienced surgical and nursing staff with hospital standard equipment.

The FUT method is an advanced cosmetic procedure that’s completely safe and doesn’t require any maintenance. The typical mild side effects that you can experience after this hair transplant process include swelling, redness, itching and a bit of pain. However, you can easily and quickly relieve the side effects through fast-acting prescriptions. Generally, from the very next day of the surgery, you can get back to your daily routine as usual.

In case you were wondering before you qualify for the FUT transplant, there are a couple of factors that we consider for a guarantee of exceptional results. Some of the most vital factors that will determine a successful FUT procedure include:

  1. Patients should have a genetically strong donor supply, i.e. a healthy donor region from where the strip unit will be extracted from.
  2. The scalp should be resistant to any potential autoimmune disorders that may occur. That’s because, in some cases, the immune system fails to respond positively as expected and instead attacks the body’s own cells. This leads to a condition where the hair cannot be extracted since the scalp is rendered contagious.
  3. Flexibility and stability of the scalp region from which the extraction would take place
  4. You should be free from DUPA: it is a condition whereby the hair does not occur in a distinct pattern and affects both the side and the back of the scalp.

The cause of your hairloss should be determined to decide which treatment would be best for you – if you are experiencing hair loss and you do not know the cause of it, we would recommend for you to have a Trichology appointment – this includes a medical examination and during the consultation, Dr Saaed will examine your head and scalp and go through your medical and hair history to try to determine which factors are causing the hair loss such as lifestyle, hormonal imbalances, immune system and hair care. He can then speak to you in detail about treatment options (which could be medication, topical treatments or other non surgical treatments such as PRP).
